Heritage Home Restoration/Renovation

We undertook the restoration and modern transformation of a heritage-listed 1917 home overlooking Lake Wendouree, carefully balancing architectural preservation with contemporary design. The result is a timeless residence that celebrates Ballarat’s historic character while meeting the lifestyle of modern living.

  • Client Challenge:

    As a heritage-listed property, the home required meticulous planning and approvals to preserve its protected architectural features. Originally built in 1917, it retained significant period detailing, from the steep gables and leadlight windows to the original brickwork, yet the owners wanted to introduce a modern extension with open-plan living, light-filled spaces, and a pool area without compromising the home’s historic integrity.

    Our Solution:

    Macneil Group collaborated closely with heritage consultants and architects to sensitively restore the existing structure while delivering a seamless contemporary addition. The restoration included intricate façade repairs, reinstatement of heritage features, and internal refurbishments that retained the home’s charm. The new rear extension introduced clean lines, full-height glazing, and modern finishes, creating a clear yet complementary distinction between old and new.

    The completed project honors the home’s century-old legacy while introducing a refined contemporary lifestyle.
